Hello, Crickets

I feel like I’m talking to the air. Technically, though, I’m not talking…I’m writing…and to be more specific, blogging…which is writing. I’m confusing myself.

Isn’t it weird to have a blog and wonder if anyone ever reads it? I’m guessing no one reads my little slice of the blogosphere pie. Maybe if I posted a picture of Joe Manganiello and his seriously perfect abs…hmm, must think on that.

Did I mention I have a fear of crickets? Well, crickets and grasshoppers (never really got the difference there). They literally terrify me, and, as luck would have it, they seem to always find me…and hop on the chair next to me…or directly on me. Absolutely NONE of them are ever wearing a top hat, carrying an umbrella, or singing “When You Wish Upon A Star.”

So…okay…this was a completely random post, prompted by a very quiet little blog…quiet apart from the crickets…which are getting louder. Scary. Very scary.

The Starting Line: Reaching for that Darn Dream

I’m so nervous right now! How silly is that? I’m getting ready to pursue a lifelong dream, and although I’m completely excited, I’m also like an anxious little kitten stuck to the ceiling. Ugh, I’m such a dork!

I’m a writer. It doesn’t make me special or unique—it’s just something I absolutely love doing. I think I’ve been writing all of my life, long before I knew to put pen to paper.

When I was about six years old, my dad would find sheets of his business stationary with short stories written all over them (Sorry, Dad). On the back of one of the stories that survived many years and multiple moves, I found a little note he wrote: “Future author.” Yeah, I cried when I found it—that many years ago and he saw my dream before I even realized I had one.

Now, I’m about to embark on this journey of self-publishing my first novel. It’s super scary, a little overwhelming, and surprisingly freeing.

All I really want to do is share my stories, worlds, and characters with people…to make people smile…make them happy…make you happy. I hope you will let me try.

One of my favorite songs is “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Reckon it’s kind of fitting as I take this first step across the starting line. (“Pure Imagination,” from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory; Music by Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley)
